Optimised plastics improve proton dosimetry

Radiotherapy dosimetry is often performed using water-equivalent plastics – rather than the reference material, water – as they allow easier experimental setup and better positioning accuracy. Currently, water-equivalent plastics designed for photon and electron beam dosimetry are also used for proton beams. It may be more desirable, however, to develop plastic water and tissue substitutes optimised specifically for clinical proton beams.
