Rescanning helps mitigate interplay effects

Pencil-beam scanning proton therapy is a highly effective treatment for static tumours, but plan quality may be compromised when treating tumours in motion. Rescanning is one strategy under investigation for mitigating the interplay effect between target motion and pencil-beam delivery. Now, a comprehensive 4D treatment planning study has shown that rescanning could be effective for treating liver tumours with small motion, albeit with many caveats.
